In 2007, the University of Manitoba’s Star Lake Field Station in the Whiteshell Provincial Park was about 40 years old. Two dilapidated trailers, which housed instructors and teaching assistants, needed replacement.
The Foundation’s $15,000 donation contributed significantly to the estimated $60,000 required to construct a replacement building.
The station is used primarily to teach four field courses in geology and geophysics. These core components of the honours and major programs (Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources—Department of Earth Sciences) provide students with the necessary knowledge of field mapping and geophysical surveying required for professional registration.
